The European LinkedIn ad study · 2026

We measured 57,643 LinkedIn ads. Here’s what actually survives.

Three years of European LinkedIn advertising — 7,773 advertisers, all five formats — measured to answer one question: why do some ads run for years while most die in two weeks? The findings surprised us.

2 · Check your own industry

The averages hide big differences between markets. Pick yours — these numbers come from the same live index, not a survey:

of this industry's ads are still running after 30 days

The survivors — straight from the index

Real ads that outlasted the field — led by the underdogs: small companies out-reaching giants — then the longest runners in every format. This is the raw material your playbook is built from.

3 · The copywriting checklist doesn’t separate winners from losers

We split the corpus into ads that survived 90 days (2,763) and ads that did not (40,138), then compared the traits marketers are told decide outcomes:

TraitSurvived 90dDid not
Average headline length28 chars26 chars
Average body length379 chars360 chars
Headline is a question3%4%
Headline contains a number9%11%
Addresses the reader as "you"43%42%
On every trait we can measure, survivors and dead ads look alike. This does not mean copy is irrelevant — it means the things checklists optimise (length, questions, numbers, “you”) are not where the difference lives. What separates survivors in this data: the offer, the format, and how many variants ran.

4 · What separates them is how many you run

We grouped 5,862 advertisers by how many distinct ads they ran, and asked one question: did any of their ads reach 90 days?

Ads the company ranCompaniesEver produced a 90-day ad
11,0091%
2–38683%
4–92,2939%
10–241,64923%
25 or more4363%

Run 1 ad

1%
chance any of it survives 90 days

Run 25 ads

63%
chance at least one becomes a long-runner

One ad gave a 1% chance of ever producing something that lasted a quarter. Twenty-five or more gave 63%. That is the largest effect in the dataset, and it dwarfs anything found in the copy.

What this does and doesn't prove. This is a correlation. Companies running 25 ads are better resourced and more committed than companies running one, and part of the effect is mechanical — more attempts, more chances one survives. We are not claiming volume alone creates quality. We are saying low volume near-guarantees you never find the winner.

5 · Format shifts the odds more than wording does

Share of each format's ads that pass 90 days — bars scaled to the leader.

The arbitrage → InMailTwice the survival rate, and only 14% of companies’ volume. The inbox is where the least-crowded, longest-living ads in this study run. If cold email is dying, this is where it moved.
Too new to judge → influencer adsThe youngest format in the record: median four days live, zero long-runners in our sample yet. That may mean the format is weak — or simply that almost nobody has learned to run it well. Either way: if you try it, treat it as an experiment with a small budget, not a pillar.

6 · What we would do with this

🔁Budget for iteration, not a launch

Three ads and a verdict = stopping at the 3% mark.

✍️Headline last

Cheapest thing to change, least decisive on this evidence.

📩Try a message ad

Underused, survives at twice the rate of the feed.

🔎Study what survived

An ad running six months is working for someone in your market right now.

7 · The conclusion

💰Survivors are paid for, not written better

The copy checklist doesn’t separate them — the offer, format and volume do.

🎲Volume is the edge

25 ads = 60× the odds of one long-runner. The survivors’ siblings died for them.

👇Everything above is the market

Below, it becomes about you.

8 · Inside the paid inbox

We read the full text of every paid message ad we hold and split them by survival. The long-runners are written differently:

TraitSurvived 90dDied
Opens with “Hi / Hello”0%23%
Average length74 words87 words
Contains a question60%52%
Asks for a call or demo2%5%
Uses %FIRSTNAME%97%97%

9 · What the 6% have in common

👋They skip the hello

0% of long-running message ads open with a greeting line. The dead: 23%. Survivors open with the point.

✂️They are 15% shorter

74 words vs 87. Every sentence that doesn’t earn its place costs survival.

They ask, they don’t book

60% contain a question; call-asks are half as common as among the dead. Conversation beats calendars.

📩They live in the inbox

Message ads are 14% of volume but survive at twice the rate — the least crowded placement in the study.

🎲They exist in bulk

25+ variants = 63% odds of one long-runner. One ad = 1%. Survival is a numbers game before it is a craft.

🏁They inherit an empty field

94% of ads are gone by day 90. The survivor’s reward: the feed’s attention with the competition switched off.

Method. Ads collected from LinkedIn's public EU ad transparency library, June 2023 – July 2026. "Days live" is the interval between an ad's first and last observed appearance; ads still running are measured to the last observation, so all durations are a floor. Survival analysis excludes the 14,742 ads with no observable duration. Industry figures require at least 3 advertisers and, for survival rates, at least 30 measured ads.
